We are the original owners of this piece.

Johanna Haas and her husband Loather were bestfriends of our family since the early 1970's.

She was a tremendously well known artist in the Detroit area not to mention around the world.

About the artist:

JOHANNA HAAS painted with a richness of color and expression that fills the viewer with a sense of joy. Vibrant hues and skillfully handled compositions, scenes from her travels. make up most of her works.

After earning a degree in Heidelberg, Germany JOHANNA HAAS was a student at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria under the critical eye of Oskar Kokaschka , the great German Expressionist.

She come to Detroit, Michigan where she earned a B.A. and M. F. A. in watercolor and oil painting from Wayne State University. While there, she was awarded Outstanding Painter of the Year in 1972, and in 1974 she received an award for total performance in watercolor.

Over the next 15 years her art work became extremely sought after and her awards and exhibitions were abundant.

Her group and one-women shows were numerous both in Michigan, Chicago, Toronto and Cologne , Germany. She has had many numerous awards...Best of Show, Detroit Women Painters in Grosse Pointe and first prize in "Naturalist" show in Mt. Clemens, Michigan in the 1970's.

Since 1974 she had been teaching oil painting at the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Association.

Over all the years she has had many, many Group Shows and One Man Shows.

Her paintings in Public Collections from the 1970-1988 are tremendous in scope and volume including Wayne State University, Detroit Blue Cross and Blue Shield Building, Oskar Kokoschka School of Vision, Salzburg, Austria and dozens more influential buildings and institutions.

Her art was often shown at The Troy Art Gallery, The Coach House Gallery, Birmingham Bloomfield Art Association just to name a few.

In June of 1988 Johanna and her husband Lothar Haas said goodbye after 35 years moved back to Germany to settle in Munich. "A Farewell Show" was June 24 - July 9, 1988 at the Bloomfield Fine Arts that was located on Woodward in Birmingham, Michigan.
