Vtg Handmade Art Fine Pottery Mary Lark Detroit Artist White Cloud Teapot & 3 Cups Red Glazed Signed By Artist
We have a few of Mary Lark's fine studio art pottery pieces in our collection. Mary Lark, as in the famous "Lark" restaurant owned by Jim & Mary Lark was in West Bloomfield , Michigan. Her pottery was often shown at the Coach House Gallery. Her work is just amazing.
She attained a degree in art (her specialty was ceramics) from Detroit’s Marygrove College, and she also took art classes at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now the College for Creative Studies) and Wayne State University.
With each piece sold was Mary's unique maker's mark of a dove on a lovely round piece of white ceramic ornament with a hole for hanging. It was used as her price tag. Just precious. Later the maker's mark of the dove was presented on the mini liquor hand thrown mini brown glazed early on at the Lark restaurant. Please see the photos.
Unbelievable, stunning piece of art work. Beautiful design of an abstract shaped teapot and 3 tea cups.
The handle of the teapot is so avant-garde. The three small teacups hold 4 ozs. They are not signed on the base. The teapot and the teacups are glazed out side and inside.
This one of a kind handmade ceramic pottery was purchased from the Coach House Gallery that was on Van Dyke Place in Indian Village, Detroit, Michigan in the early 1970’s. Nona Herzog owned the gallery. Nona and Arthur Herzog were my parents best friends.
Nona was very active and involved with local artists as well as the Scarab Club downtown. The local artists were many….Mary Lark, Johanna Haas, Nahler, Bill Evans, Karen Carter, Chars Herzog III to name a few. Her gallery also had artists from around the world come and display their art such as Vagh, Miele, and many more.
It is one of a kind and is just spectacular.
So unique in it's construction and how it was glazed. The 10" teapot is just stunning in the red glaze with different shades of muted reds and white. The base is signed on a white unglazed circle Lark in red. The elaborate, small lid that fits perfectly is also signed on the inside Lark with a red "dot".
This is an exquisite piece done in such an eclectic style.
