This shawl was brought trans Atlantic in 1910 by my great grandmother, my grandmother and her brother. They left their village of Checea and took the train from Timisoara to Flume,l Italy. They boarded the boat in Fiume, Italy to cross the Atlantic to Staten Island. They did well as my great grandmother was fluent in Romanian, Hungarian, German and Serbian.
While my grandmother was still living, I did a taped interview about our family's history and eventually a written history. The last photo is of my great grandmother holding my grandmother and uncle.
This shawl was amongst her most treasured items that made the trip. We have two of these shawls sold separately. The shawl does have some discoloration. It is meant for repurposing yet still a fabulous piece.
Absolutely beautiful printing of the design with jacquard weaving of the fabric and the scale of the flowers to the boarder confirms the age.
From an expect that I reached out to:
They are wool shawls. They were mass produced in textile factories and sold throughout central/eastern Europe. The fringe is hand tied, not crochet or knitting, just knotted tired using your hands. They were always incredibly popular with peasant and urban women and a desirable addition to their dress. When they went out of use, some got repurposed as piano covers and urban home decor items due to their size (thrown in couches, etc), but they were originally designed and worn as shawls. These are early designs, but they continued to be produced over the past 150 years and much poorer examples are still produced today. They are really lovely!
We have many items from Romania over the years.
We also spent a month in Romania the summer of 1975.
It was the first year Romania was opened to the West for tourism.
This is a museum quality piece, truly one of a kind.
Please see the photos to complete the description and condition. Many more photos available.
