COMMENTARY and PROFESSIONAL OPINION:
The Song of Songs of King Solomon consists of twelve original illustrations created as drypoint prints by Salvador Dali in 1971. Three hundred twenty of the portfolios also contain the text with the illustrations. The artist drew the images with his diamond point on copper printing plates. The point sufficiently scratched the plates to leave an intaglio image of incised lines which held the ink for the printing process.
The total edition of 520 sets of prints ( with or without text) was published by Leon Amiel of Amiel Publishing. The subject prints exhibit pencil signatures which were not clear in the photographs provided. Some at last appear to be numbered as being from the edition of 200 so they will be on Arches paper. Another fifty prints of the sets with text were numbered in Roman numerals and were printed on parchment (6 sets) on Japon paper and twenty sets were numbered with letters.
After printing, the artist signed each print in pencil and the publisher’s staff added watercolor and gold ink (brass filing) to the images. ***All are considered fully original and the artist signed them. In addition, however, after 1980 when Salvador Dali became a recluse, Leon Amiel published an estimated 50,000 restrike prints from the steel-faced plates and sold them with forged signatures. I served as the Government’s expert witness in the United States (FTC) vs. Amiel Publishing. Leon was deceased and his widow, Hilda died before the trail. Their daughter and two granddaughters were convicted if the continued sale of the fake prints. Bernard Ewell 2014
