South American Tapestry Weaving Geometric IGUANA M.C Escher ARTIST STYLE Wool Handmade Titled "Leaping Lizards" Unique Frame
This fabulous hand woven tapestry, so beautifully framed is from our large collection of vintage art. This tapestry was purchased in 1979.
M. C. Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotinits. This iguana/lizard pattern is reminiscent of this artist and his work.
The complete measurements of the wood frame is 40 1/2" x 31". The hand woven image is 33" x 24". The brown cotton fabric is 1 3/4" at the top and bottom of the weaving. Along the sides the fabric measures 2".
On the verse, the weaving is just amazing. There is one white fabric label: 'HAND WOVEN" ORIGINAL.
A nice, interesting way to frame it. The gold tone grommets are 1 1/2" with a unique construction tied down to the frame with thread. There are 15 grommets along the top and the bottom. Along the sides there are 19 grommets. The grommets are tied in place with 1" thick brown thread. The thread is then "looped" threw out the unusual construction of the frame.
The heavy wood frame is 1 1/2" wide with a 1/2" indentation.
We really like presentation method and are wondering if that's related to the frame on which it was done. We don't know for sure but it still has that feeling. Nonetheless, it would have been done on a tapestry frame.
Our first impulse is that it is Peruvian.
We do love the M. C. Escher inspired tileing of the design.
At the top of the piece there are two metal hooks for hanging.
This is a sensational work of hand woven tapestry art. We think of it as museum quality.
