This Time Magazine Time Cylinder is perhaps one of the most unique item in our shop.

To try and think back to the days before computers, tables and cell phones.

This amazing tool allowed you to figure out the time zone and the time of the day.

The piece is extremely detailed and colorful.

The original pamphlet and instructions are included.

8.5" x 3" Base. Circumference is 11".

Just a few paragraphs from the pamphlet that we find fascinating:
SCILLY ISLES, 1707
Time is an intriguing thing. To the psychologist it is an aspect of consciousness, the means by which we give order to our experience. To the physicist, time is one of the three fundamental quantiles (a part from mass and distance) in terms of which be can describe anything in the universe.
To the philosopher, time is something else again.
To Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovel, however, it was a very practical matter. In 1707 a fleet of the Royal Navy, commanded by him, got its longitude wrong and ran into the Scilly Isles. The loss was four ships and 2,000 men-including Sir Cloudsley.
As a result the British Government offered a prize of 20,000 British Pound (around a $1,000,000By today's standards in 1981) for a method of accurately determining longitude at sea, which led to the first accurate ship's chronometer and ultimately to the present time zones system.
