History of the artist:

Tyrone Larson began working with his wife Julie Larson in 1966 at their studio in Royal Oak Michigan. Tyrone, a self-taught potter did most of the wheel throwing, while Julie concentrated on glazing, and designing new pieces which referenced Italian pieces she had seen as she grew up in Italy. Work that was geometric and architectural often used slab construction techniques. From 1966 to 1986 their preferred clay body was stoneware often decorated with 23 K Gold and Platinum Lusters. After 1986 their work was completely collaborative. They moved to North Carolina and taught at the Penland School of Crafts.

In the mid 1980's the Larsons' work began to change in order to obtain more color n their work, they switched to porcelain clay, dropped their firing temperature to Cone 6, changed to oxidation firing electric kilns, and began using the slip-casting method to form their wares. Again, very much against the prevailing winds in the clay world. Slip-casting was the logical technique for making all those square and hexagonal pots they previously hand built.

Fine craftsmanship and function have always been important in all their pottery work. Their creative philosophy is very simple: Love what you do and bring joy to others through your life work. Have fun, be happy, and it will all be expressed in the work.
