Hmong Stitchery Exhibit at the Galerie de Boicourt
Galerie de Boicourt in the Fisher Building will present an exhibit of Hmong needlework from September 19th through October 3rd, 1981.
There will be a demonstration of this unique stitchery and applique technique with the Hmong women in full formal attire on Saturday, September 19th from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.
The Hmong, an ethnic people from Laos provided the most intensive support in serving the interests of the United States during the past Indochina War. With their extensive knowledge of the topography in the mountainous regions of North Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Burma they provided the most ferocious defense of Laos against the Communist during the Vietnam War years. They also were indispensable in rescuing American personnel, particularly downed pilots. The Hmong suffered the greatest risks and the largest number of casualties during the war serving their interests of the free world.
The Hmong refugees were some of the earliest Indochinese peoples to resettle in the United States. For them especially, life is a struggle. They must aspire to adapt the American culture while attempting to preserve their language, tradition and culture. The Detroit area Hmong population numbers about 500. A wonderful cultural tradition passed along by Hmong mother to daughter is the beautiful stitchery and applique designs you will soon be able to view at the Galerie de Boicourt. It combines an unusual color sense that can both stimulate and amuse with a whimsical and skillful symmetry of design. Many of the Hmong women, when decided upon the lovely treasured chattels they would take to the U. S. , decided upon the lovely fabric, threads, beads, yarn and pompons you will see in their stitchery.
Galerie de Boicourt is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11:00 till 5:00 p.m.
